Module Three. HTML

Just started on module three and this is quite exciting. Feels like I'm doing something clever.
Working through to lesson 8a. So far so good. It's a good tutorial that explains things well.
Just learned about anchors and hypertext tags, and 'relative links', meaning you can construct a number of web pages on the one computer and if moved to another computer all the links will stay in tact.(From the tutorial).
Struggled a bit with the shuffling around of files and then changing the tags. I only kind of understand what I've done. maybe tomorrow it will be clearer.
OOPS. Just whenI thought I was getting it, the page I was making of my own has lost its pictures. Can't yet fathom it out. too late. Tomorrow.
BINGO, got it to work, thanks to advice from fellow student Nikki.

Working through the tutorial. I think some of it is sinking in but there is a lot to take in and if I needed to do a fancy web page now I would be frantically looking back over all the notes to try to remember all the tags.

Finished the tutorial and everything seemed to go o.k. Also did one of my own as I was doing the tutorial, just explaining which new tags I was learning etc.

Any satisfaction I felt in finishing the tutorial has dissapeared as I cannot for the life of me work out the FTP upload.
I have downloaded the FTP program successfully.
Have moved all the volcano files across to the left side of the window.
I think they have gone through, but that's where I come to a dead stop.

I don't know what an I drive is.
I dont understand putting things into my www file.
I still havn't worked out how to get things onto my presentations page.
All these thing are driving me insane and I am spending far too long trying to work them out.

Fellow student Nikki has tried to help me and I am now getting too embarrassed to keep asking the same questions.

Mudule two. ICQ

Have downloaded ICQ and tried it for the first time last night. Said a simple G'day to Alan who responded. Anything I typed after that however appeared to be getting blocked, as Alan posted a message saying somebody was trying to get through and was it me?
This is all a bit new to me so I'm stumbling around a bit.
I have to say I'm not too keen on all the advertising stuff that keeps on telling me that a girl is out there wating for me. That can get a bit annoying.
I attempted to perform the task, finding the ICQ number for advanced netstudies, but was given an error message 117 and told to try again later.
I eventually put 'advance netstudies' in the 'search for people by keyword' box, and was shown the ICQ number 337-293-557.
At the same time I had a chat with Niki via ICQ and she got the same result as I did, but then discovered it was not the correct answer in the self test and there was no message in the 'about' section.
Had a look in the correct number, 257853416, and got the message ' This is the ICQ identity i use just for my advanced internet use students.'
Still confused as to why my first enquiry threw up the wrong number???

Module two . Newsgroups

Just embarked on the Newsgroups section and I,m stumped already. Opened up 'newzbot.com' but didn't know what to do with it.
Visited Mozilla but once again am a bit confused as to what exactly I'm looking at. I guess I will have to keep going back to it till it starts to make sense.
Joined a newsgroup (I think) about private investigators as I am one (part time now), and posted an inquiry. This was it.

If anyone can help,
I am seeking information on the privacy laws in other countries (I'm in
Australia.) and how they affect you as a private investigator.
The privacy laws here in Oz are very strict and a private investigator
is not allowed acces to any of the essential information that police
and other agencies have (ie motor registry) even though we now have to
satisfy stringent entry requirements, including a year at college, and
pay a yearly fee.
I believe that the Australian Institute of Private Detectives is
currently lobbying government to give qualified investigators more
access, but as yet nothing has come of it.
We are not wannabe cops. We are not trying to undermine the cops. We
just want to help people with a problem to find the solution.
At the moment the only people these laws are protecting are the bad
guys (slight exaggeration) as the average Joe has nothing to hide.
When I scan the internet I see alot more information seemingly being
offered in the United States.
Is that really the case?
What about Britain?
And other countries?
Thanks. James

It's now a few days later and I've finally managed to obtain the name of the newserver provided by my ISP.
Armed with that I was able to enter a geneology newsgroup soc.genealogy.britain which directed me to my outlook newsreader page.
Anyhow I,m going to try to lodge a post.
Here it is:

Has anyone heard of a place by the name of Caraghofa? If my mother hasn't lost all of her marbles yet it is in or near a placecalled Llanfyllin in Montgomeryshire Wales. Mum has a vague recollectionthat her grandparents lived in Caraghofa cottages but isn't sure whetherCaraghofa was the village name too. This is my first step in tracing my family and would you believe I'm lookingfor a Lily Jones at the above address. Now there wouldn't be many Jones's inWales now would there?

Not sure if this is acceptable but it's all I can get at the moment.

Module two. Email lists vs discussion boards

An email list is not interactive (unless it's a discussion list). It is great if you want to recieve regular newsletters or updates on your chosen field, but if you want to join in a discussion about your favourite topic, then a discussion board is better (in my opinion).

One should remember if posting an email onto a list that there could be many more people reading it than is perhaps shown on the list. Keep in mind a large group of people when putting forward your ideas or points, or risk alienating some of your list members.
It may be a good idea to post the occasional message so as to give yourself an identity and therefore be included in the list 'community'.

If you wanted to follow the fortunes of your favourite football team (obviously that would be Manchester united) an Email list would be the best option as you will recieve regular updates.

Study groups however would be more suited to a discussion board as regular interaction, with lots of questions and answers, can take place between students. Another advantage to the discussion board is that most are maintained by the originator of the board and are kept on a single server.

One downside to discussion boards is that you have to actually go to it to see what people have said recently, whereas the listserv will send you updates automatically.

Module two. Lists.

Moving on to lists now, which bothers me a bit as I have yet to work out the difference between a newsgroup and a list. Every now and then I read someones explanation and I think I can see the light. Then I read another that seems to contradict it and I'm back to square one.
Even when I went into yahoo groups as suggested, the list I selected first described itself as a newsgroup!
Anyway, we'll push on.
I did find a few interesting 'lists', particularily in the field of Fireballs (It's a boat) and boat restoration.
I noticed that some groups went to great pains to inform you right from the getgo that their list was moderated and spammers and undesirables were wasting their time. That was good to know. Here's an example;
ATTENTION SPAMMERS - There is no spam on this list - new members posts are MODERATED so no spam goes through - don't waste your time and mine!
I did, however find that when some of the lists were opened some of the posts had nothing whatsoever to do with the original topic.

I also took a look at liststopica.com. I entered the same topics here and found it not as good as the Yahoo groups. A search for boat restoration for instance turned up all sorts of stuff, just nothing to do with boat restoration.
I also experienced a lot of pain in the bum pop-ups while using this site.

Module two. Organising emails.

I have organised my incoming emails into folders for people who contact me regularily and a couple for miscellaneous messages if varying levels of importance.
I have done this because I like to keep track of what a particular person has said over time so that when I answer them I do not insult them by either forgetting what they have said, repeating myself, or answering a question that was not sent by them.
Also, I can still find an email by doing a word search if I have forgotten who sent it.

Module two. Task 4 Filters

Having recently set up a new email account with MSN hotmail, I have started from scratch, as it were, and put into place a number of filters and blocks.
I have enabled a function titled 'Automatically suppress internet content in messages' which is a hotmail image filter. The idea is to prevent or control unsolicited mail.
I have also set up a junk email filter.

Module two task 3. Attacments

Sending attachments can cause problems for a couple of reasons, but it it doesn't take much to ensure the recipient can open any you may send.
One simple ,thing you can do is to enquire as to the system they are using. Don't expect that they have the latest and greatest versions that you may have.
If, for example they are using an older version of WORD and you are using a newer version, they may have problems opening your file. Using the file format RTF should combat any problems as it can be read across programs and platforms.
The encoding of your attachment may cause a problem for the recipient, so make sure your default is MIME. It's a good start and the recipient should be able to open it.
One other precaution you can take to be a courteous emailer is to briefly describe what is in the attacment using text. This can act as insurance, ensuring that even if the recipient experiences difficulties, the issue in the attachment can still be dealt with.
In summary, don't assume anything about the recipient or the equipment they may be using.

Module two task 2 Nettiquette

Task 2
When sending and receiving emails a certain 'netiquette' should be followed.
For instance, when sending an email, one should not forget that if all the intended recipients addresses are placed in the 'to' box, then everyone who recieves the email will be able to see who else has recieved it.
This field should be used to direct messages to a person or particular people.
It is quite acceptable to place all the intended recipients in the to box.

If the message is not directed at someone but you would like them to get a copy anyway, you would be better to use the 'cc' box.
To place recipients addresses in the 'cc' box you are sending them a carbon copy or curtesy copy that doesn't nessessarily need a response, you are just keeping them in the loop as a manager would to numerous or scattered employees.

If, however, the message is of a confidential nature, perhaps the manager only wanted a particular employee to recieve it and no one else was to know, he would be advised to use the bcc or 'blind carbon copy' option.
Using this option, the recipient's message will not contain a complete list of all other recipients as is the case if the recipient was just one of the list added to the 'to' box.
This option can also be an anti spam precaution as, when sending an email to multiple recipients, their email addresses are hidden from each other, thus avoiding making long lists of addresses available to the recipients

Module two task 1. Email.

Task 1
Using my old email account, when recieving an email, the information that could be gleaned from the the header was;
The senders name
Their email address
Who, beside you, they sent it to, plus who they 'cc'd it to.
The basic subject of the email.
Any attachments that may be included
Who I forwarded it on to.

Using my newly set up hotmail account, I was able to enable a function via the help menu that allows you to 'View Message Routing Information'.
Enabling this function allows much more information about the sender and the message, including all MIME information to be displayed.
The information contained in this header would go a long way in helping you should you wish to report instances of abuse or harrassment, for example.
It also displays the content type, eg text/plain, plus the content-transfer-encoding, eg 7 bit.
Below is an example. ( i've given it a colour to highlight where it starts and ends as it is so dam long!

MODULE TWO. START

About to start module two even though I am not at all happy with module one. I'm hoping I will be able to come back to it later.
This week I finally changed from dial-up to broadband. The improvement in studying is significant.
I also created a hotmail account for myself and am using it to perform my email tasks.

Resource project

Been making a start on my resource project and it's driving home to me how much I have to learn. I think my study skills are sadly lacking and I'm hoping they will improve as the course progresses. I have an idea of what I would like to say but putting it into a presentable format is troubling me somewhat.

Tried the ping thing and I think I've had some success.
Pinged curtin.edu.au from the dos screen of my pc.
4 packets were sent with an average time of 256ms.
To get to the dos screen using windows XP I went in to start, all programs, accessories, command prompt.
See results below.

Telnet

First attempt at a Telnet communication. Found the Deakin University computer O.K. but had trouble emailing the result back to my curtin mail. A very helpfulperson at Deakin emailed me to tell me that my attempts were 'bouncing back to Deakin. The reason? I was simply forgetting to add the '.edu' into my address. Once corrected, all went smoothly.

reading 'Contexts'

After printing out the contexts refered to in module one I sat down to what I thought was going to be a long boring read. Suprised to find it was kinda interesting. As a regular internet user in the past, I thought I had a handle on it. Wrong. There is a lot more to consider in the world of electronic communication than first meets the eye, and this Contexts document certainly make you think about the internet in a different way.
Still working through it but so far it's proven very enlightening.
I would recomend a thourough reading to help with Module one.

Module one. traceroute

Late at night and I've just discovered traceroute and ping.
Reading the Howstuffworks site was very helpful, rather than diving in and winging it.
Using the site http://centralops.net/co/ I was able to tracerout to curtin however the ip address was different to the 'correct answer in the self test. It appears from the discussion board that others have experienced the same.
As shown below it took 22 hops between centralops and curtin with an average time of 246 milliseconds.

FTP

Just had a lash at the FTP part. Downloaded ipswith ftp.
Typed ftp................ in the url and everthing seemed to go O.K.
Found the readme file in the first folder and answered the magic word.
Still not fully sure as to what I was looking at while looking at the directory structure, but as with the rest of this module, a little bit clicks into place with each study session.
Capitalisation was the missing word.

Learning log

Was a bit concerned about this learning log thing. A helpful person on the disussion board suggested this blog site so here I am. It's a whole new world to me and it's kinda exiting.
My next mission is to try to get this into the curtin area. I've looked at a couple of the other students and they look like they really know what they are doing.

module one. start

Started my Uni course last monday. Apprehension turned to outright fear as I started to read what was expected, as it all appeared like a foreign language.
Soon discovered through the discussion board that I wasn't alone in being confused about certain things. The discussion board is a new experience for me and I think it's wonderful. And the people are so freindly and helpful. Sometimes I feel stupid asking questions, so it's a great relief to see topics that I am concerned about posted by others too.
As is explained in the 'Concepts' document, you need to participate in the discussions to enable other members to become aware of you and include you in discussions, otherwise you are 'invisible'.

farrsyblog

My name is James Farr.
I am a 46 year old pom.
I have set this blog up as part of a university course I am doing. B.A. Internet studies.
I really have little or no idea what I am doing at the moment as this is all new to me.
I am hoping it will all become clearer as time goes by.
